Crop Urbanis is researching the technical and commercial feasibility of developing a profitable hydroponic farm in Cabo Verde. The project responds to high vegetable prices, dependence on imported food, limited water resources, an arid climate and restricted cultivable land. At the same time, tourism, hotels, restaurants, international investment and air connectivity continue to grow, while Cabo Verde’s first participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has further increased the country’s international visibility.

The research focuses on market demand, suitable crops, location selection, hydroponic technologies, production costs, pricing, resource requirements and operational organisation. The objective is to create a realistic, locally adapted business model that can supply hotels, restaurants, retailers and consumers with reliable fresh produce while supporting water efficiency, climate resilience and new economic opportunities in Cabo Verde.

Problem

Cabo Verde’s tourism market creates steady demand for fresh vegetables, but islands remain dependent on imported produce. Local hydroponics must prove that it can match demand, quality and price while operating within water, energy, skills and logistics constraints.

Our idea

Combine market demand analysis with crop selection, hydroponic system design and a local operating model. The farm concept would be sized around real hospitality buyers, available resources and a staged route from pilot sales to reliable production.

Expected results

A defensible shortlist of crops and buyers, production and resource assumptions, an investment and operating model, and a pilot plan able to test commercial viability before scaling.

Current status

The project is in research and partnership-development stage. Market, site, utility and cost assumptions need local validation before a final farm configuration is selected.
