Growing plants without light

Feeding plants with no photons.

Description

Testing plant systems that grow on external carbon—potentially from renewable-powered electrochemistry—so biomass formation does not depend on light. Researching energy efficiency, composition, and safety to identify niches where "no-light" cultivation makes sense.

Problem

Artificial light is one of the largest energy inputs in controlled-environment agriculture. It is not yet clear whether plant systems fed with external carbon can produce useful biomass without photons at an acceptable energy, composition and safety profile.

Our idea

Test plant tissues and cultivation pathways that use externally supplied carbon, including carbon produced through renewable-powered electrochemistry, then compare growth, composition and total energy demand with light-based controls.

Expected results

A clear feasibility boundary for no-light cultivation, measured energy and carbon balances, composition and safety data, and identification of limited applications where the approach could be technically meaningful.

Current status

This is exploratory laboratory research. The project does not yet make a commercial-production claim and requires controlled biological and energy experiments.
