Autonomous farms for remote islands
Reliable fresh produce where logistics are hardest.
Description
Containerised, automated greenhouses for islands. Powered by microgrids, optimised for water and labour, and validated with transparent cost and reliability models so communities can replace fragile imports with steady local production.
Problem
Remote islands face expensive and fragile food imports while local production is constrained by water, energy, labour, maintenance capacity and extreme weather. A technically productive greenhouse is insufficient if its utilities and service model are unreliable.
Our idea
Design modular, automated greenhouse systems around island demand, available skills and microgrid constraints. Crop planning, water treatment, energy storage, remote monitoring and maintenance would be evaluated as one operating system.
Expected results
Reliable production and resource benchmarks, a transparent cost and maintenance model, resilience scenarios and a repeatable deployment template adapted to different island conditions.
Current status
The concept is in pilot-design and partner-development stage. Site demand, utilities, local operating capacity and logistics must be validated for each island before equipment is selected.
