Project overview

Crop Urbanis spent one month working directly at a hydroponic tower farm in Tahiti. This was a practical on-site assignment rather than remote consulting. The mission covered fertilizer selection, adaptation of the crop nutrition strategy, testing of locally available substrates, optimisation of irrigation practices and the management of plant health problems under tropical conditions. Hydroponic production in French Polynesia has strong potential, but solutions cannot simply be copied from farms operating in Europe or other climates. High temperatures, humidity, disease pressure, logistics and limited access to agricultural inputs all require a locally adapted approach.

Challenges & approach

  1. European hydroponic methods could not be transferred directly to Tahiti’s high heat, humidity and disease pressure.
  2. Fertilizers and substrates had to be selected around locally available inputs and island logistics.
  3. Irrigation, crop nutrition and plant-health management needed to be adjusted together under real farm conditions.
