Hydroponic research labs powering student innovation
Crop Urbanis set up comparative hydroponic trials at Shenyang Agricultural University, combining data-driven crop optimisation with bilingual workshops for engineering and agronomy students.
Project overview
Shenyang Agricultural University engaged Crop Urbanis to modernise its hydroponic research lab and embed an applied learning track covering lettuce, tomato and pepper systems. The programme needed to serve faculty research goals while giving students hands-on experience across multiple hydroponic technologies.
Challenges & approach
- Consolidate disparate lab setups into a consistent research environment with reliable data capture.
- Balance academic research rigour with accessible, bilingual instruction for undergraduate cohorts.
- Provide ongoing support so faculty can adapt nutrient regimes and climate variables post-engagement.
Our contribution
- Audited existing ebb-and-flow, NFT and drip systems; redesigned layout for parallel comparative trials.
- Implemented sensor suite and logging templates covering EC, pH, dissolved oxygen, light intensity and climate data.
- Authored bilingual lab manuals and delivered workshops guiding students through hypothesis design, data collection and analysis.
